Goddes of the sea
Iemanja, © Francisco Santos

Yemanjá is the goddess of female fertility, she also protects the heads of babies during birth. She is displayed as a young woman, the ampleness of her breasts indicating her fertility. Also her beauty is emphasised. She symbolises the ideal of the beautiful mother.
She protects the family and governs worries we have for beloved people. She is also called the pearl goddess and is often displayed as a mermaid.

On her celebration day small mirrors, perfume flacons, combs, lipsticks, flowers and so on are thrown into the sea as gifts and as a sign for Yemanjá, while people wish each other love and happiness. Her colors are light blue and white, her symbol is a fan and her stone is the pearl. She resides in the sea. Saturday is her day.
