Francisco Santos

Visual artist

Francisco Santos is the great painter who deals with the African deities of Candomblé. In his creation he depicts the mysticism and the mythology of the deities in very colourful, agile pictures with an impression of dance.

He originates from Santo Amaro da Purificação - Recôncavo Baiano, as the famous singer Sänger Caetano Veloso or his sister Maria Bethania. He grew up in the Pelourinho of Salvador. There he was also decisively involved in the restoration of the ecclesiastical paintings in the famous churches of Salvador.

Francisco cooperates intimately with the major Blocos Afros. For instance he is the art director for the arrangement of the performance and of the costumes of the Filhos de Gandhy in carnival.

His work has contributed very much to the popularization of Candomblé and was shown in widely recognized exhibitions in Africa, the United States, Japan, France, and Germany - as in the Völkerkundemuseum in Frankfurt.

We are glad he made pictures available for our website - muito obrigado Francisco !
